What is a Pinion Gear
The smaller gear of a pair of meshed gears is called the pinion gear. In a radio controlled model, the spur gear is almost always on the shaft of the motor or engine.
What is a Spur Gear
The Spur gear is the larger of a pair of meshed gears and is usually fixed to the driven shaft of the vehicle, which may be the drive shaft or center differential.
Depending on the size difference or ratio of the pinion and spur gear they may act to increase or decrease speed or RPM and inversly decrease RPM or increase torque.
Understanding Gear Ratios
Any two gears will have a “ratio”; if your RC car has a 20-tooth (20T) pinion gear and a 100-tooth (100T) spur gear, the ratio is 20:100. Divide the number of teeth on the spur gear (100) by the number of teeth on the pinion gear (15).
Number of teeth on Spur gear / Number of teeth on Pinion gear = Gear Ratio
100 ÷ 20 = 5
The gear ratio is 5:1 (five to one), and that means that the pinion must make five revolutions to turn the spur gear one revolution. It’s that simple.
